The Tasmanian V Class, New Zealand Ds Class, and British Class 04 locomotives were built by Drewry Car Co as industrial shunting locomotives. These locomotives were shipped all over the world for Standard and Cape Gauges, with a range of customisations. Australia - Tasmania The Tasmanian Government Railways V class were the first diesel locomotives operated by the TGR, with 12 imported or built locally at Launceston from 1948-1968. Another two were imported for the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company totalling 14 locomotives operating in the state. In service in Launceston, Hobart, Deloraine, and Smithton, along with private industry at Mt Lyell, they served until the 1980s. Since then they have been popular for Heritage Railways around the country. 10 of these have survived into preservation, currently at:
Now used in-service at Heritage Railways across Tasmania and Mainland Australia, these Australian locomotives have survived the test of time in harsh conditions. New Zealand In New Zealand the Ds Class were imported from 1949 - 1955 as a fleet of 16 locomotives to run shunting duties in Wellington, Lyttleton, and other ports. Another four locomotives were built for the Ohai Railway Board and the Whakatane Board Mills, bringing the total to 20 built for New Zealand Railways. With many surviving into heritage operation, they continue to serve and fulfil their purpose as shunters across New Zealand. They are operating at:
United Kingdom The first four British Rail Class 04 locomotives were built with skirts for operating on Tramways, with a total of 142 built for BR in four batches from 1952 - 1962. The class was distributed throughout the BR system, and were used until 1972, with D2289 in service until 2012. 21 have been preserved across the UK and many can be seen operating at heritage railways.
